Why Electrical Clothing Must Be Arc-Rated (AR) 

It is crucial to understand the distinction between Flame Resistant (FR) and Arc-Rated (AR) clothing. While FR clothing protects against ignition, it does not account for the violent thermal force of an arc flash event. AR clothing, on the other hand, is specifically designed to withstand arc flash events and provides a higher level of protection. The arc rating of a garment (expressed in cal/cm²) measures its ability to resist exposure to an electrical arc discharge. 

Key Factors for Selecting PPE 

Choosing the right PPE ensures full protection against electrical hazards. Keep the following points in mind: 

• Rating: The arc rating for protective clothing and equipment must be higher than the arc flash hazard present for the electrical equipment (determined by an arc flash hazard analysis). 

• Coverage: All ignitable clothing must be covered. 

• Body Protection: No exposed areas; avoid short sleeves or cuffed shirts. 

• Accessories: Hairnets, beard nets, and high-visibility vests, or any other required equipment, must be arc-rated or removed within the arc flash boundary. 

• Layering: The outermost layer must always be arc-rated. 

• Avoid Meltable Fibers: Do not wear materials like elastic underwear or performance wear (e.g., Under Armour) underneath PPE, as they can melt when exposed to high heat. 

• Laundering Matters: Improper washing can degrade or contaminate the protective qualities of AR clothing. 

Proper Laundering Tips for AR Clothing 

Maintaining the arc rating of AR clothing requires specific care: 

• Washing: Turn garments inside out and wash in warm water using only unscented (original) detergent. Avoid fabric softeners, which are flammable and can turn AR clothing into a wick. 

• Drying: Tumble dry on warm and press if desired. 

• Avoid Contamination: Never use hydrogen peroxide, chlorine bleach, or standard soaps as they can compromise the arc rating. 

• Follow Manufacturer Guidelines: Refer to the ASTM F2757-09 standard and your clothing specific care instructions for detailed guidance. 

Acceptable Detergents and Spot Cleaners 

Vision Protection Matters 

An arc flash produces intense light in the visible, infrared (IR), and ultraviolet (UV) spectrums, which can lead to serious eye injuries: 

• Eye injuries account for 4.2% of all arc flash-related injuries, including permanent damage to the cornea or retina. 

• Flash blindness, or temporary loss of sight, is a common hazard. 

How to Protect Your Vision 

• Use arc rated face shields that provide UV and IR protection. 

• Always wear safety glasses underneath face shields for added protection. 

• Adhere to NFPA 70E Article 130.7(C)(4), which mandates eye protection whenever there is a risk of injury from arcs, flashes, or flying debris.  

Hearing Protection 

The impact noise of an arc flash can rupture eardrums or cause permanent hearing loss. Article 130.7(C)(5) of NFPA 70E requires employees within the arc flash boundary to wear hearing protection. Always include hearing protection as part of your arc flash PPE.
